This multi-function instrument houses the speedometer, tachometer, multi-function display, gear indicator and fuel gauge. Several functions and features can be customized including brightness and backlight color. See Controls and Indicators → Instrument Customization.
Speedometer
Some models provide both mph and km/h modes. Press and hold the function switch to toggle between modes.
See Figure 1. The speedometer (1) registers miles per hour (mph) or kilometers per hour (km/h) based on market.
Tachometer
NOTICE
See OPERATING RECOMMENDATIONS section. Do not operate the engine above maximum safe RPM as shown under OPERATION (red zone on tachometer). Lower the RPM by upshifting to a higher gear or reducing the amount of throttle. Failure to lower RPM may cause equipment damage. (00159a)
See Figure 1. The tachometer (2) displays the engine speed in revolutions per minute (RPM).
Multi-Function Display
See Figure 1. The multi-function display (3) allows viewing of the odometer, two trip-odometers, clock, fuel range and tip indicator. The function switch (6) will toggle between features.
Odometer
The odometer registers the distance the vehicle has traveled. The odometer can be viewed when the motorcycle is OFF by pressing the function switch.
Trip Odometers
NOTICE
Never attempt to tamper with or alter the vehicle odometer. This is illegal. Tampering with or altering a vehicle odometer may cause equipment damage. (00160a)
Use trip odometer A or trip odometer B to register distance traveled on a trip or between refueling. The ignition switch must be in the IGNITION or ACCESSORY position to view or reset the trip-odometers.
Clock
The clock displays the current time in either 12 or 24 hour format. The clock can be viewed when the motorcycle is OFF by pressing the function switch.
To set the clock:
Fuel Range
The fuel range function is a calculated value of the approximate distance available with the amount of fuel remaining. During consumption of the first full tank of fuel, the gauge software will begin learning your riding patterns, eventually tailoring the fuel range calculations to your unique riding characteristics.
Fuel range can be accessed at any time the ignition switch is in the ACCESSORY or IGNITION position. Repeatedly press function switch until fuel range function is displayed. Fuel range is indicated by the word 'RANGE' in the multi-function display. The calculated distance remaining is displayed.
When the low fuel warning lamp illuminates, the range feature will automatically be displayed unless this feature is disabled. To disable or enable, press and hold of the function switch while in range display mode:
NOTE
  • When adding fuel to the vehicle, it is best to add at least 2 gallons of fuel to allow the fuel level and range displays to update. The level and range displays may not update immediately. They will slowly update over the next 30 miles.
  • The range is updated only when the vehicle is moving 16 km/h (10 mph) or faster.
  • The low fuel warning lamp indicates that approximately 3.8 L (1 USgal) of fuel remains in the tank. Refuel as soon as possible.
  • Battery Reconnection and Initialization: If the battery is disconnected and reconnected, the gauge requires approximately a half tank of fuel to properly initialize fuel range functionality.
After the range calculation reaches 16 km (10 mi) remaining, the range display will show "r Lo" to indicate that the vehicle will shortly run out of fuel.
Tip Indicator
WARNING
If tip occurs, check all controls for proper operation. Restricted control movement can adversely affect the performance of the brakes, clutch or ability to shift, which could result in loss of vehicle control and death or serious injury. (00350a)
Should motorcycle be tipped over, the word "tip" will appear in the display window. The engine will not start until reset. To reset, cycle the ignition switch IGNITION-OFF-IGNITION.
Gear Indicator
See Figure 1. Gear indicator (4) is a calculated gear position based on wheel and engine speed. This feature can be enabled and disabled. The factory default setting is ON.
NOTE
The gear position displayed may be momentarily inaccurate depending on rider clutch use characteristics and clutch wear. This momentary false reading can occur if the clutch is allowed to slip either due to excessive wear, misadjusted clutch or if the operator rides the clutch.
Fuel Level Display
See Figure 1. The fuel level display (5) is graduated in 1/8 tank increments to show the approximate fuel level. This feature can be enabled and disabled. The factory default setting is OFF.
The fuel level display and tank mounted fuel gauge may not match at all times. The fuel level display has eight segments while the tank mounted gauge as seven segments.
